Kyanite’s name derives from the Greek word kuanos sometimes refered to “kyanos”, meaning deep blue.  Kyanite can occur in white, gray, or green but the finest gems are a deep sapphire blue.  The luster can be pearly and cat’s eyes sometimes occur.  The hardness is 4.5 on one face of the crystal and 6.5 on the other.  Our fine blue gems are from Nepal.
